My favorite way to get the promotion or close the big deal is not to ask for it 25 different ways. It's not to lower your price and it's not to take out your competition. It is this...BE READY. Before November 2025, there is nothing Pete Golding could have done to get Ole Miss to offer him the job of head coach of Ole Miss. Why? Because they had superstar Lane Kiffin as a head coach with a lot invested in him. No amount of begging, bargaining, demanding or lowering price would give Pete an edge on Kiffin's job. What's also true is that once head coach Kiffin sent Ole Miss into a panic by talking to Florida and LSU, it was far too late for Pete to "get ready" to be a contender for the head coach role. He was either ready or he was not. After gaining credibility as Alabama's defensive coordinator, Pete spent just two years at Ole Miss but he made a noticeable difference in Ole Miss' biggest weakness, their defense. So when Kiffin flinched, Pete was on deck. He had already done the work to be ready and Ole Miss called his number.
If you want to be the obvious choice to replace a competing business or to be promoted to a new position, you've got to put in the work now to be the clear choice when it's time to find a new leader.
